Back to articles list Call for an action: Helping animals in northern Israel 18:17 27/07/2006
Starting on Wednesday, July 12th 2006, Israel has found itself in a war it didn't choose to be in. Sadly, we hear and read every day about soldiers and innocent people getting killed and hurt. Israelis who live all through the border line with Lebanon and near it: in the upper Galilee, the lower Galilee, the valley of Jezrial, and even in Haifa, Aco and Tiberies are being bombed all the time, without stopping.
The people in the rear are being asked to be patient in spite of the emergency situation and the long time that they spend in bomb shelters, and give the army a full support as it defends Israel. A lot of the people in Haifa and the northern area own pets- a dog, or a cat. These animals have, of course, very developed senses. They are alert to what is going on around them, and sense upcoming things a lot earlier than humans do. They receive all the noises in their environment: the massive shooting, the supersonic booms, the atmosphere of unrest and the tension in the air. All of those may cause our pets feel heavy mental pressure. For those who walk on four legs, the situation in the north is a long, continuous nightmare of suffering from the noise of shooting and falling bomb shells. Since the war in the north has started, the “Let the animals live” association is receiving many calls about the abandoning of animals due to a rash leaving of houses. “Let the animals live” is sending a rescue vehicle in order to evacuate dogs that were left behind, and bring them to private boarding houses in the center part of Israel. Unfortunately, "Let the animals live" pound has no space left. Thus, we have no choice but to turn to private boarding houses that cost money. Due to many turns from the public concerning the adversity of animals, that some of them were left tied up or locked in abandoned houses, the association had to drive several times to Nahariya, to rescue the dogs which were left behind. Few days ago (July 23rd), the rescue vehicle driver reached Nahariya at the afternoon, after a call was received in the morning from a citizen who told of how his female dog was tied up and closed for a whole week without food and water in the city. Since no one was willing to open up the door for it, the association driver drove and rescued the female dog. In addition, two frightened puppies were found wandering in the streets of Nahariya. A female dog that ran away due to the noise of falling Katyoosha was also “Let the animals live" has transferred many dogs from a pound in the north to a boarding house in the center area. By doing so, more room was made in the pound for dogs that got lost or abandoned because of the war. “Let the animals live” received a call concerning four little dogs that were left behind in an apartment. The dogs were there for a whole week, without anyone to take care of them or feeding them. Another call that was received about a female dog with eight puppies. The female dog stayed beneath a car and lasted through the bombing period of the last two weeks, while breast-feeding her puppies. Two other dogs, that were probably abandoned, were found next to the breast-feeding female dog. Yesterday (July 26th), our rescue vehicle went to Tzfat and rescued 3 dogs that stuck in locked, appartment. After this rescue the car went to Kiryat Shmona, and during explosions all over, we succeed rescuing 6 dogs puppies. About us: “Let the animals live”, a non-profit animal welfare organization, was founded in Israel in 1986 in an attempt to provide immediate aid to stray animals in distress. Rehabilitation and adoption of these abandoned animals are the goals of the organization. In addition the organization aims to educate the general public to understand and care for animals. The organization does not practice euthanasia (mercy killing) of healthy animals. Over the past 20 years the organization has neutered 50,000 dogs and cats and homed 35,000 of them. Aid and veterinary care has been provided to tens of thousands of animals including horses, donkeys, crocodiles, dolphins, camels and virtually every kind of animal in distress as a result of abuse. Thousands of complaints have been filed with the police, which have resulted in hundreds of civil suits as well as petitions to the Israel Supreme Court. In so doing public awareness of the importance of protecting animals has been increased and led to the expansion of the law against cruelty to animals. “Let the animals live” also provides assistance to large enterprises with the treatment and breeding of animals on a no-kill basis. Lectures are given at schools and other educational institutions in order to improve the youth’s attitude toward animals. The organization’s facilities Animal shelter – adoption center and discount veterinary services: Approximately 100 cats and 250 dogs are cared for in the shelter where the primary aim is to relocate them to loving homes. Every adopted animal The pound is fully loaded with dogs and cats, and it’s in a need for renovation or for a substitute place, which has to be new and with more space than the old one. The only ways of financing all the activities described above, are public donations, and we also have a lots of volunteers. The association is always there for animals in times of emergency, like in the current war, and like in the disengagement from the Gaza strip. All that comes in addition to its everyday activity. The association has only one rescue vehicle, and when it's used for rescues in the north, it's on account of rescuing in other areas. Thank you for your help, Eti Altman |
